Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
