Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also featured experts in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
