The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
