Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
