Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He contested the legal system and the law triumphed.

Sixty days following getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems destined for incarceration.

Imminent Incarceration

The found-guilty plotter – who had been living under house arrest in his estate while a series of judicial steps and petitions proceed – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the near future, amidst mounting speculation that he will be moved to a infamous maximum security facility.

Previous Statements on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the right-wing ex- paratrooper displayed little sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to provide those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to finish in prison, you simply need is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Jail Destination Discussion

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, a group of four this week visited the prison in an apparent effort to discourage the high court from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the septuagenarian figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute digestive ailments – the outcome of a near-fatal knife attack during the last political campaign – signified it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells holding 40 prisoners: “That is practically one square metre per detainee.

“We conversed to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the sole person voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's anticipated imprisonment.

Writing in a leading newspaper, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and alleged Brazil was about to see “the largest wrong in its record”.

“It represents an unfairness that erodes the spirits of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided General Response

This could be true given the considerable following Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. But his predicted imprisonment has also gladdened the spirits of millions others who feel he deserves to be jailed for planning to prevent the elected leader from taking power – and also conspiring to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the current administration's political party, commented: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to obtain respectful treatment – but dignified handling while incarcerated. He must not continue being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time celebrating the harsh conditions of prisoners, had abruptly realized to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties are not for offenders – decided to inspect a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are truly like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting conduct”.

Possible Jail Conditions

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about 14,000 prisoners, his expected destination looks to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “special” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around a short distance away.

Based on information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – about the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 square meter WC with a water facility and a 12 square meter terrace. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a set and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report suggested.

Political Reactions

The lawmaker criticized the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his fate in the {
