“This is the most important contest, right now, in the heavyweight class. These two boxers have accepted the challenge when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Parker is the interim champion and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker insists on fighting.

“Wardley is also in a fantastic position and he merely needed to be patient for his opportunity. He said ‘I refuse.’ He wanted to fight – and versus Parker because it offers him an opportunity to jump the queue.”

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not focused on a loss. I honor my adversary and what he has done and the way he's trained for this fight. But I am on a different level and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the both of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my professional life and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I rise to the occasion. Saturday will be the same. The gap between Parker's level and my perceived standing has been a recurring narrative during my entire career.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his record. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the sport for a long time and had several tough bouts. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a significantly more of those than me.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker is likely to be too experienced, and too technically proficient, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a grueling encounter with the conviction that he is the prime candidate for a title shot against Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a significant margin.
