New York Launches Reporting Tool for Public to Share ICE Videos After Arrests of Four US Citizens

The state attorney general has introduced a recent digital platform asking residents to provide images and footage of ICE operations throughout New York. This step comes just a day after a major immigration operation shook Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking widespread outcry.

US Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action

A lawmaker revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG declared in a statement.

"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity recently, I encourage you to submit that evidence with my office. We are committed to assessing these accounts and investigating any violations of law."

Submission Process

The portal includes spaces to upload visual evidence of the operation, as well as a section to indicate where it occurred. Before submitting, individuals must check a box that acknowledges that "the attorney general may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, including in a court case or public report."

Information about the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say included dozens of federal agents, happened in a popular neighborhood of the city where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded in large quantities – often to sightseers.

Videos of the incident show multiple masked and armed officers restraining and arresting a individual, and forcing aside witnesses. Crowds of New Yorkers followed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was also seen traveling down the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

In a midweek briefing held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be arrested for without cause." He clarified the persons were freed on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he said. "This constitutes a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is merely a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to halt violence that they initiated."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the immigration operation escalated – every political contenders condemned the incident, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the Trump administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It must stop," one mayoral candidate declared.

New York City advocacy organizations spoke out also.

"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on local sellers trying to make a living. This action had no connection to public safety and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Official Guidelines

Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has said it does not take into custody US citizens. Yet, external research has revealed that numerous US citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the start of the existing leadership.
