Taliban Employed Discarded UK Gear to Locate Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told
A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure sensitive equipment allowing the Taliban to locate local individuals who collaborated with western forces.
Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk
The whistleblower, known as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the data leak were told to relocate and switch their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
MPs are looking into official response of a serious disclosure of confidential data concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to come to the United Kingdom to flee the Taliban.
How the Leak Occurred
An electronic document containing their personal data, such as names, addresses and sometimes household data, was mistakenly released by an official working at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.
The breach became known in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to relocate to Britain appeared on online platforms.

“There seems to be a false assumption that Afghan rulers lack comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed lawmakers.

During testimony about if militant forces had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They possess all resources.”
Aftermath of the Information Leak
Preliminary research provided to the inquiry suggested that at least 49 family members and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been murdered.
A gag order regarding the breach was implemented in last year and blocked all details regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.
Protective Actions
Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization associated with advised affected households they were supporting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been compromised”.
“We advised that they relocate where feasible and changed their contact details. That constituted the primary information that, if authorities had access to such data, would cause identification and capture,” Person A explained.
Contested Findings
The source disputed that internal investigation performed by a former official had been incorrect to state that the acquisition of the dataset by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves former occupations.”
Person A described disturbing treatment experienced by concerned people, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
“We have had toddlers who have had bones crushed to try to get relatives to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
