UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic involves managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
