Five days after the powerful storm hit the island's west coast with unprecedented strength, residents in devastated communities along the coast are continuing to hope for assistance.

Multiple routes are obstructed by wreckage and people are isolated with limited provisions, lacking utilities, and uncertainty about recovery timelines.

Increasing Casualties

Authorities confirmed on the weekend that at least 28 people in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a devastating Category 5 hurricane with nearly 300 km/h wind speeds.

This represents almost a 50% increase in the death toll overnight, and the number could rise as workers advance into new parts of the island in the near future.

Local Consequences

This particular parish is believed to have the second-most instances of unconfirmed deaths, after St Elizabeth to the eastern sector. The cyclone's core made landfall around the bordering areas. In St Elizabeth an estimated 90% of homes have been wrecked.

'What comes next is unclear', referred to the scene as ''complete destruction'.

Road to Recovery

A long stretch of road leading into Westmoreland Parish meanders through a graveyard of trees – heaps of broken wood, shattered and bent, spreading across the countryside.

Heaps of wreckage are piled along the parish's roadsides, next to battered buildings, shipping crates turned on their side and crowds of people wading through the destruction.

Immediate Challenges

Those living in Whitehouse, a shoreline settlement and trading area on the perimeter of Westmoreland, say the delay in receiving help is increasingly difficult.

A local man said he has heard promises of incoming aid delivery, but "they haven't appeared"

He sat in the shade on a temporary seat in front of a building barely standing – having lost all overhead covering – unsure of what to do next.

Connectivity Issues

About 400,000 people in Jamaica were experiencing power outages , and countless others have no access to cell phone service or Wi-Fi, separated from global communications.

Government representatives revealed that more than 200 StarLink devices have been deployed across the island to help people access the internet.

Official Reaction

Representatives acknowledged complaints the authorities have faced for its handling, saying there were "several factors" causing slowdowns.

"Refuelling, Areas for Landing, Accessibility and Timing/Visibility," authorities clarified.

The country's leader urged that the "initial priority is on clearing debris, fixing necessary utilities", as well as providing food and medical supplies.

Individual Accounts

In a tiny community adjacent to the coastal town, one affected individual leaned on damaged cement. Nearby, the community he's always lived in throughout his existence has been ruined, plus his means of survival.

"Our community is completely destroyed," he expressed. The fishing infrastructure was demolished and is now "flat"

"The storm eliminated all possessions," he explained, incorporating his vessel, which he describes as "completely destroyed"

Regional Fortitude

Inhabitants of these locations are marked by self-respect and perseverance, phrases commonly used on community broadcasts and visible through their optimism in the most difficult circumstances.

Positioned beneath the remains of a badly damaged building, a local man said he has lost everything, but "we must maintain belief and positive outlook continues"

"Must continue. Will not surrender," he declared.

Agricultural Impact

Similar attitude appears demonstrated by an agricultural worker, positioned in his vehicle offering remaining produce – the last of his produce that was protected from the hurricane.

Regarding his agricultural land, he said: "Total devastation occurred. Complete demolition happened" But he quickly followed up with: "We have to give God thanks we're alive"

International Assistance

Concurrently, international assistance is beginning to arrive into Jamaica.

American authorities declared that its crisis response group had reached the island. And countries including the UK have also promised significant monetary support and emergency supplies.
