While Swimmers Fled Danger, Viral Picture Depicts Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, detected pops echoing through the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, speaking to a pair who had rushed up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone approaching at her rear. This turned out to be a rescuer, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Tragedy

The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of valour in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews treating dozens of victims.

Council Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the staff rose to the occasion from the instant the incident started right into late that night.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a council representative.
